Why You Will Love This Hot Cocoa Dip

Dessert dips are the easiest way to feed a crowd something sweet. There is nothing to bake, nothing to slice and nothing to portion, and everyone can graze at their own pace. This one tastes like the holidays in a bowl, which makes it a natural fit for Christmas parties, cookie swaps and cozy movie nights.

  • Real hot chocolate flavor. A blend of unsweetened cocoa and hot cocoa mix gives both deep chocolate taste and that nostalgic, milky hot chocolate flavor.
  • Light, mousse-like texture. Freshly whipped cream folded in at the end makes the dip airy and easy to scoop with delicate dippers.
  • Smooth, not gritty. Sifting the powdered sugar and cocoa keeps lumps out of the finished dip.
  • Fast and flexible. It takes about 15 minutes and can be made a day ahead.
  • Kid friendly. Little helpers can measure, stir and sprinkle the marshmallows on top.

It also looks adorable on a holiday table. Serve it in a wide mug-shaped bowl or a shallow dish, and the marshmallow topping instantly reads as hot cocoa to everyone who walks by.

Best of all, it is endlessly adaptable, so you can change the toppings to match any season or party theme.

Ingredients You Will Need

You likely have most of these ingredients already in your holiday pantry. Here is what each one brings to the bowl.

  • Cream cheese: The rich, tangy base. Use full-fat brick cream cheese, softened completely, for the smoothest dip.
  • Unsalted butter: Adds a silky richness and helps the dip stay creamy once chilled.
  • Powdered sugar: Sweetens without any grit. Sift it with the cocoa.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: Delivers the deep chocolate flavor. Natural or Dutch-process both work; Dutch-process tastes a little darker and smoother.
  • Hot cocoa mix: Two or three packets of your favorite milk chocolate hot cocoa mix give the dip its classic hot chocolate taste.
  • Vanilla and salt: A small amount rounds out the chocolate.
  • Heavy whipping cream: Whipped to soft peaks and folded in for lightness.
  • Mini marshmallows and chocolate chips: For the classic hot cocoa topping.
Quick tip: Cream cheese needs to be truly soft, not just cool. Leave it on the counter for about 1 hour, or cut it into cubes and let it sit for 20 minutes. Cold cream cheese leaves tiny lumps that never beat out.

How to Make Hot Cocoa Dip

Set out a large mixing bowl and an electric mixer. A hand mixer works perfectly here; you do not need a stand mixer.

  1. Whip the cream first. In a chilled bowl, beat the cold heavy cream with 2 tablespoons of the powdered sugar until it holds soft peaks. Refrigerate it while you make the base.
  2. Beat the cream cheese and butter. In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter on medium speed until completely smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add the dry ingredients. Sift in the remaining powdered sugar, the cocoa powder and the hot cocoa mix. Beat on low until combined, then on medium for 1 minute until smooth.
  4. Flavor it. Beat in the vanilla and a pinch of salt. Scrape down the bowl and taste.
  5. Fold in the whipped cream. Gently fold the whipped cream into the chocolate base with a spatula in two additions, just until no white streaks remain.
  6. Top and chill. Spoon the dip into a serving bowl, swirl the top and scatter with mini marshmallows and mini chocolate chips. Chill for 30 minutes before serving.

The short chill helps the dip firm slightly so it clings to graham crackers and pretzels instead of sliding off. If you are in a hurry, it is still delicious served right away.

Best Dippers for Hot Chocolate Dip

Half the fun of a dessert dip is the platter of dippers around it. Aim for a mix of salty, crunchy and fresh so guests can keep coming back.

  • Crunchy: Graham crackers, cinnamon graham sticks, vanilla wafers, shortbread cookies and gingersnaps.
  • Salty: Mini pretzel twists, pretzel rods and salted pretzel crisps.
  • Fresh fruit: Strawberries, banana slices, apple slices and pineapple chunks. Toss apples and bananas in a little lemon juice to keep them bright.
  • Festive extras: Candy canes, waffle cookie sticks and large marshmallows on skewers.
  • Bakery treats: Small pieces of brownie, pound cake cubes or biscotti.

Count on about 1 1/2 cups of dippers per person if the dip is the only dessert, and a little less if it shares the table with cookies and other sweets.

Tips for the Best Hot Cocoa Dip

  • Sift the cocoa and powdered sugar together. Cocoa is notorious for clumping.
  • Fold the whipped cream gently. Overmixing knocks out the air and makes the dip dense.
  • Add the marshmallows just before serving if the dip will sit out for a while, so they stay soft and fluffy.
  • For a darker chocolate flavor, use Dutch-process cocoa and dark chocolate hot cocoa mix.
  • Serve the bowl on a plate of crushed ice on warm days or in a heated room to keep it cool and scoopable.

This dip is a natural partner for a slow cooker of my creamy crockpot hot chocolate at a winter party. For another fruit-friendly dessert dip, try my easy caramel apple dip, and set out a few squares of layered peppermint bark for a candy cane touch. Easy Variations

  • Peppermint hot cocoa dip: Add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract and top with crushed candy canes instead of chocolate chips.
  • Mexican hot chocolate dip: Beat in 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a tiny pinch of cayenne for a warm, gently spiced finish.
  • Salted caramel cocoa dip: Swirl 3 tablespoons of thick caramel sauce over the top and sprinkle with flaky salt.
  • Mocha dip: Dissolve 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder in the vanilla before adding it.
  • Shortcut version: Replace the whipped heavy cream with 2 cups of thawed frozen whipped topping. The dip will be a little sweeter and very stable.

Keep the cream cheese base and the cocoa ratio the same for every variation, and you will get the same smooth, fluffy texture no matter which flavor you choose.

Make Ahead, Storage and Food Safety

You can make the dip up to 2 days ahead. Cover it tightly and refrigerate it without the toppings, then stir gently and add the marshmallows and chocolate chips before serving. Because it is made with cream cheese and cream, do not leave it at room temperature for longer than 2 hours. The USDA explanation of how temperatures affect food covers the 40°F to 140°F (4°C to 60°C) danger zone where bacteria grow quickly.

Leftover hot cocoa dip keeps covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. I do not recommend freezing it, since the cream cheese and whipped cream can turn grainy and watery once thawed. For a long party, set out half the dip at a time and keep the rest chilled until the first bowl is nearly empty.

Planning a Hot Cocoa Party Table

With Christmas on Friday, December 25, December fills up fast with cookie exchanges, school parties and family gatherings. This dip makes the centerpiece of an easy hot cocoa bar that guests of every age will love.

  • The day before: Make the dip, cover and refrigerate. Bake or buy any cookies you plan to serve.
  • Morning of the party: Wash and dry the fruit and set out bowls for the dippers.
  • One hour before: Start a slow cooker of hot chocolate and arrange toppings like whipped cream, sprinkles and crushed candy canes.
  • Just before guests arrive: Top the dip with marshmallows and chips and surround it with dippers.

For a kids’ party, set the dip on a low table with small paper cups so each child can scoop a portion and add their own dippers. For grown-ups, a board with biscotti, dark chocolate squares and sliced pears makes the same dip feel a little more elegant. Either way, plan on one batch for about 12 guests and double it for a bigger crowd.
