Method
- Step 1: Heat the whole milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching on the bottom. Heat until the milk is steaming and small bubbles form around the edges, but do not let it come to a full boil. This should take about 4-5 minutes.
- Step 2: Remove the saucepan from heat and add the chopped white chocolate pieces. Let them sit in the hot milk for 30 seconds to begin melting, then whisk gently but thoroughly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth with no lumps remaining.
- Step 3: Add the vanilla extract and 2-3 drops of pink food coloring, whisking until the color is evenly distributed throughout the hot chocolate. Start with just 2 drops and add more gradually until you reach your desired shade of pink. Remember that gel food coloring is more concentrated than liquid, so use it sparingly.
- Step 4: If using heavy cream for extra richness, stir it in now and return the saucepan to low heat for just 1 minute to warm it through. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed, though the white chocolate usually provides plenty of sweetness on its own.
- Step 5: Pour the pink hot chocolate into mugs and top generously with heart-shaped marshmallows. For an extra-special presentation, add a swirl of whipped cream and a sprinkle of pink sprinkles or edible glitter. Serve immediately while hot.
